I work 8-4:30 on this day.I'm pretty ticked off because I HAD originally talked with Kim about taking 3 hours of PDN because my uncle's father passed away. And, I need to go to the visitation. So, the total time I would've taken off is 3.5 hours because then I wouldn't have had to have worked the last half hour of OT. So, I found a trade instead getting me off at 4:30 which meant I only had to skip 1.5 hours of my OT. I asked Kim if she could excuse my OT not paid and she took her sweet time to reply and ask if I've asked anybody to take my OT. I replied that it's unlikely that anybody would be able to since we are all mandated 7.5 hours of OT for the week and the cap is 8 hours. She still hasn't replied to me and it's been 10 hours. So forget it. I tried to play the honest nice way. So now I'm just skipping the OT. I can't stand that these people think that life doesn't happen outside of this place. I'm not playing games with them. I should go ahead and take the 3 hours of PDN as well just to get out of here. But I have knives to pay for :)

I have never liked, nor understood, the concept of mandatory overtime. It is ridiculous to me. How can you FORCE someone to work over the 40 hours that you hired them for, whether you are paying them more or not? I know that Madd has tried to explain to me several times that it is federally regulated, etc... but still I am sure they could find a better system. All the places I have ever worked would announce when overtime was allowed (or needed) and there were enough people jumping at the chance to make more money that they wouldn't have to make it mandatory. Perhaps if they didn't limit people to 8 hours OT, they would have plenty of people willing to work more so that those who really didn't want to work over wouldn't have to. I don't know...it's just so silly to me.

Well, I see where you're coming from. However, I understand why Qwest does what they do. It's cheaper to pay us overtime than it would be to hire new people and to pay them benefits and all that crap. And before we even started the hiring process they made it VERY clear that mandatory OT is a condition of the job. So we can't complain too much.

Exactly... you save the company in question so much money its actually funny. Some jobs, like a call center, are going to have times they are busy more than other. It is not fair to the company to be forced to hire a bunch of people to only cover that busy time, and thus having to shell out tons in benefits. Now granted, our system is no where close to perfect. There is much that COULD be worked on, however, is not.

My word, am I typing this crap out loud? :D

Well, I didn't really mean hire more employees. I guess I would think that surely enough people who work there now would gladly work overtime for the $ that it shouldn't be mandatory for those who don't really want to. Example: you have 50 employees. instead of forcing all 50 to work 7 hours overtime, make it voluntary because I am sure 35 people would put in 10 extra voluntarily, and the 15 that maybe didn't want to (or didn't sign up in time before the available slots were filled) don't have to. I guess where I've worked the extra money was motivation enough to volunteer for OT when available, so they would never have to make it mandatory for all.

Some times we get enough people... they are asking for vol OT people right now. The reason it is important we keep our numbers up, is because of the government. If we do not have our lines available enough for the month in taking calls, then we are fined a few million dollars. I do not remember the exact amount, I only know it is well into the million+ club. Now, also thanks to the government, we let people go early with etime (excused time non-paid). This is because, if we are TOO available, then the government thinks we should be that way ALL the time, and will up how available we are. While I get angry how Qwest plays the numbers game in this way, I am not as much as the government that is the instigator in the first place.

Yeah it's true that sometimes we get enough volunteers to work OT, but not often enough. Most people are wanting to gouge out their eyeballs during the first 2 hours of the week.
